Help Them Flutter By/ Save The Butterfly

Barrie Friedland

Let's pause the hate/cruelty and illegal stupidity to celebrate royalty.  The beautiful Monarch Butterfly is facing extinction. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing that these insects be given endangered species protection. You have until March 12, 2025 to demonstrate your support.

Please go to the agency's website to learn more here. That page is a little muddled as the federal government is also being threatened with a major loss of people, together with the extinction of hope and function.

Back to the majestic insects. There are two groups distinguished by their migratory patterns: eastern and western.  The former group of Monarchs has declined by 80% while the latter category by 95%. It is unclear the true percentage- ranging from 25 to 40% of species- are facing extinction.  A report by the United Nations estimates that 1 million species could be lost forever.

And the cause is us. People. Humans. Can you imagine summer without these beautiful pollinators?  This might be a little indelicate, but they are also a critical part of the food web for other species.

Look, you aren't shopping today.  Send in the petition protecting Monarchs.  Call your Congress Representatives and Senators. During the rest of the week, purchase and plant butterfly friendly plants and milkweed- the main food of these butterflies and their secret weapon from predators.  Not people, but natural enemies.  Create a puddling station for their water.  Use social media to promote this species and their survival. Don't use poisons in your gardens.  Seek out natural remedies, like cinnamon. And here's a thought, pull out weeds by hand.

Donate to organizations like the Center for Biological Diversity that fights for nature in all its amazing glory, from animals to habitat.  Or as the website states: Help save life on earth. Monitor policies and legislation very carefully, even more so now, and be aware of assaults on land, water, animals in order to drill, privatize or monetize.

Seriously, what would you rather have around you this summer as you picnic and hike: A rabble/ a flutter of Monarch butterflies or Elon Musk carrying around a chainsaw? We have an obligation to the planet and all living things.
