"Going herd" Such a nonsensical and imbecilic phrase. Under normal circumstances when uttered the speaker would be roundly ridiculed and brushed aside. Unfortunately we do not live in ordinary times, and so while we might laugh, it is only so we do not cry. After all, this is America in 2020. To "go herd" as Donald Trump so eloquently puts it, has once again reared it's ugly head as the go-to response by our federal government. A government that has failed utterly, in every imaginable capacity to safeguard its people, and now, as our country continues to take one body blow after another, Trump and his cronies are just giving up! Because that is what this really means. To decide that pursuing herd immunity is our "strategy" to combat Covid-19 is to simply surrender, to say you have been beaten utterly and are not up to the task. Our leaders have been measured, and all them, Democrat and Republican alike have been found wanting, most of all Trump. We must do better! To give up as a people, and just accept that this virus will wash over us is to consign, literally Millions to death, and many millions more to hardship, illness and deprivation. Think of all the grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and children who will die or lose someone they love. All Trump has to say? "It is what it is." This is unconscionable, on it's face, but to make matters worse, this psychopathic strategy might not even work! Idiots like Trump don't, or can't read, so as they consign millions to death to "save the economy" they seem completely oblivious to how fruitless such a pursuit is. We are already getting evidence that some people can become re-infected with Covid-19 after only a few months, which could mean that we may never reach full herd immunity, or if we do, the cost in lives and livelihoods will be even higher than the staggering numbers already discussed. Do the American people want to "go herd" or do they think the government should stop giving up on them, and actually help? Do you approve or disapprove of the way Trump is handling the coronavirus outbreak? Approve - 40% Disapprove - 60% Do you think the coronavirus outbreak in the United States is under control? Under Control - 13% How do you feel about the possibility that you or someone in your immediate family might catch the coronavirus: Worried - 65% Americans are worried, they are tired, and this disapprove of how their government is handling things, but they are also, in some cases giving up. And that is the most dangerous thing of all. The total lack of action by Trump and the Republicans, as well as the total feckless response by the Democrats has made so many in America cynical and hopeless. Many believe that the government simply cannot act in the public interest anymore, not by choice, but by nature! When disbelief in our institutions is so high, the foundations of there legitimacy is at stake. The system is clearly broken. The main question is, are the American people going to put up with this anymore? Are they going to keep continuing to accept the choice between destructive nihilism and do-nothing defeatism? With an election coming up there is still time for action! Of course we must vote, but that is the least of it, our government cannot currently be relied upon to represent the people, or even follow or uphold the law. If we are to ever achieve justice, equity, and a policy set that represents the will of the people, it's going to take an enduring collective movement of commensurate size and power, to the forces of economic oppression, ignorance and bigotry nihilism we face! To create that better future will require the stamina to outlast the powers that be, and convince them that there is no choice but to change or lose everything. Don’t miss this chance to join us every Tuesday, in growing solidarity and power until we take back our democracy from amoral special interests, and greedy politicians: Don't Shop on Tuesdays!
