Unrepresentative Policy - Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Discussions over immigration are often lead to proclamations, that what is really needed is comprehensive immigration reform. Recently, we learned that Trump's idea of immigration policy involves "fortifying a border wall with a water-filled trench, stocked with snakes or alligators....He wanted the wall electrified, with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh." This would be quite a "comprehensive" reform to our immigration policy, but could this possibly be what Americans mean when they talk about immigration reform? And moreover, do Americans really think our immigration policies need fixing in the first place?
Agree or Disagree: The USA needs comprehensive immigration reform
Agree: 75%
Disagree: 25%
It's overwhelmingly clear that Americans believe we need to change the way we handle immigration in this country, but the question still remains, what do Americans mean when they use the term? Luckily for all of us, the hearts of the people are not nearly so dark, vengeful and scared as Trump. As we've discussed in previous weeks, when we ask the American people about specific immigration policies, here is what they think:
Against Child Separation - 88%
Strength Through Immigration - 62%
Disapprove of US Handling of Migrants - 60%
Puerto Rico Statehood - 66%
Refuge for Asylums - 60%
Support DACA - 83%
The American people know that our system is broken, and in desperate need of reform, and not just around the edges. Furthermore, when we dig beneath the surface, we find that overwhelmingly Americans support a humane and welcoming immigration policy that recognizes immigrants strengthen our nation. We must demand that our politicians end this man-made immigration crisis that unnecessarily destroys human lives and flies in the face of our shared values. They must act to bring about the comprehensive immigration reform we all want so much. Contact info can be found at: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
