I know what you are thinking. Abdul El Sayed only won by one percentage point. Yes, the polls having him in a much better position were wrong. And yes, there is a sizeable - but still a minority - Muslim population in that state. Many of whom stayed home in 2024 over Biden/Harris' policies inre Israel and Gaza. Of course, this administration is far worse, but that's a whole different bunch of voters.
Back to the Michigan Senate primary election last Tuesday.
PAC money poured into this race. $70 million for Haley Stevens, $4 million for El Sayed. $35 million to Stevens was from AIPAC. An aside: if any group bets/buys/bribes a politician with that much dough, you have to wonder what must be given in return. But what if it's from all the “we love children/books and the environment” PACS? We all know those groups don't have that much cash.
The GOP foresaw El Sayed's appeal before the hapless democrats. And clearly prior to Israeli and other deep pocketed lobbyists. (And again the GOP destroyed Tim Walz knowing his power and electability. Something VP Harris first recognized and then wasted.). Wait, maybe we get some GOP consultants to find the best Democratic candidates.
But for the love of democracy, don’t follow Katie Hobb’s example, who as the Democratic Governor of Arizona has picked a "moderate" Republican turned Independent as her running mate for reelection. She said to Kamala Harris who at least had the great instincts to choose Tim Walz but then abandoned him- hold my beer. Here is a thought Katie Hobbs. Pick a progressive democratic to join your ticket!
The corrupt and lazy folks in both parties are scared. Nay petrified. If you can keep voters at bay with a. fear and hate or b. ok these candidates are terrible but so much better than whoever is running against them, then why even try to govern...This is the feckless two-step the Democratic party establishment has been dancing for decades. But apparently voters want to be truly represented. They increasingly are demanding cogent policies and solutions to the overwhelming number of problems facing us and the world today.
Bad news standard D's and MAGA: Mamdani is delivering on his campaign promises and several he didn't even promote. Like filling potholes and deep cleaning the subway. Uh oh. And the 3 progressive candidates for Congress the NYC Mayor endorsed, all won. Bears repeating. Hakeem Jeffries- deal with it. Every time the right yells Communist- another Democratic Socialist has won.
Yes, Cori Bush lost. The incumbent who was funded by AIPAC last time had around 4.5 million dollars to spend. She had $185,000. Citizens United, that seems fair. /s. Oh and dangerous immigrant Elon Musk is planning to spend a lot of money on the pending Senate races this year. So let’s not take our eyes off the prize, El Sayed still has to win in November. In addition to Musk, the GOP is planning a laundry list of illegal and immoral tactics to suppress or deny votes, even without passing the SAVE the GOP's A$$ legislation.
And if he loses for any reason the corporate Dems will be tsk-tsking and shaking their heads. As if moderate Democrats who pivoted to the right have never lost. Sure, President Hillary Clinton and President Kamala Harris… But more importantly, we need a solid victory in Michigan in the general election.
Other states are in play: From Maine to Alaska. Ohio/ both Carolinas, Iowa, Texas, Florida. So, stop trying to damage candidates who can win and support those that the voters are choosing. Thus, it is clear. Please make certain your vote is heard. In every primary election and of course in November. Educate yourself on charter and bond issues as well as more local offices such as school boards or state and municipal bodies.
We have collective power. Luckily elections are conducted by the states. That is half worrying. But Trump et. al. can't destroy it all at once. We have the numbers and growing, unified financial power. Vote and encourage/ protect your friends and neighbors. Of course, shop locally six days a week and then Don't Shop on Tuesday. Billionaires, you need us. Not only are you all not needed but your greed and lack of humanity are harming the 99%. Take your data centers, corrupt pols and rapacious cruelty and go.
