The Famous Campaign Question

Writer's picture: Jacob KravetzJacob Kravetz

Are you better off now than when (Fill a name in the blank/ ok Trump) was elected? Except what is being polled here is: are you better off than you were LAST WEEK.

It’s amazing how one week can change everything and nothing at the same time. The American people seem finally to be fed up with the catastrophic failure of our government and aren’t going to take it anymore! The pot is perhaps finally boiling, and change is coming quickly everywhere. Last weeks problems are swallowed in the adrenaline of the uprising. And yet, even as our focus as a people shifts, the underlying crises of the global pandemic and climate collapse march steadily forward, indifferent to our struggles for justice.

We are in quite a pickle, and the American people know it.

In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time?

Unsatisfied:

March 2-13 (57%)

April 1-14 (68%)

Gallup has been tracking opinions about America’s trajectory for decades. The last time a majority of people were satisfied with the way the country was headed was back in 2004, which shows what we already knew, our government has not been responding to the needs of the people for a long time. It also shows that merely being unsatisfied is not enough to create change. There is cause for hope, however, the first month of the COVID-19 response corresponded to an 11% jump in dissatisfaction among the American people, one of the largest ever recorded. Gallup doesn’t have data yet published from May, let alone June, but there is little doubt that the events inflicted upon the American people in the last 6 weeks can only have increased that dissatisfaction.

Tragedy after tragedy has befallen the American people, concentrated as always on the poor and vulnerable, often black and brown people. American’s are just dissatisfied, they are mad as hell and they aren’t going to take it anymore! We must take this incredible tragedy that has befallen all of us, in which everything has changed and transmute it into a rebirth of a more socially conscious society! Just because it's what the people want, doesn't mean we'll get any of it, given the state of our government and our "leaders," unless we put pressure on all our representatives through a broad and enduring movement of people, demanding change. Don’t miss this chance to change our country for the better. Join us every Tuesday, in growing solidarity and power until we take back our democracy from amoral special interests, and greedy politicians: Don't Shop on Tuesdays!
