Can I Get a Witness?

This past week the Senate sunk to a new low in our nation’s history. An institution that once boasted of being the preeminent deliberative body on earth, is putting the finishing touches on rushing through a sham trial of the impeachment of President Trump. The expected acquittal won’t officially occur for a few more days, but last week’s vote to block witnesses from even testifying during the “trial” ripped the mask off any remaining pretense of respect for the constitution, or the Senate itself. The actions of Senate Republicans and Chief Justice Roberts have effectively neutered their roles as a co-equal branches of government, and trampled on the very concept of rule of law and trial by jury. This is a devastating blow to our democracy, and the pursuit of justice over despotism. As ever, the American people don’t agree with this behavior. They believe in justice, and wanted to get the full story around Trump’s impeachment:

Do you think witnesses should be allowed to testify in the Senate impeachment trial? Yes – 75% No – 20% Americans understand that the justice can only be achieved through a full examination of the facts. Republicans like Mitch McConnell know this as well, which is why they have worked so hard to cover up said facts. They know that they only continue to get away with thwarting the will of the people by hiding their actions behind clouds of confusion and obfuscation. And this is where the Democrats have also failed in representing the people. Despite valiant efforts from some in the House of Representatives, the Democrats did not effectively expose the Republican machinations to the public. Whether through incompetence or apathy, the Democrats have resigned themselves to insisting “there was nothing we could do.” There may be nothing they can do, but we the people can most definitely take action! No matter the results of the next election, it’s clear our current political system will attempt to thwart ever effort towards democratic representation either directly or with excuses. Much of congress will still be bought off by powerful and amoral businesses, and special interest groups who vehemently oppose policies created for, and supported by, the American people. If we are to bring democratic representation back to America and make a government by, of and for all of us, we will need to vote in as many competent and brave public servants as possible in the next election, and then put pressure on all our representatives through a broad and enduring movement of people, demanding change. Without such efforts we will see the last remnants of our democracy slip away. Don’t miss this chance to change our country for the better.
