Do you approve or disapprove of the job Congress is doing? Approve: 18% Disapprove: 77% To say Congress is unpopular in the United States is about as unsurprising as saying water is wet, or Anthony Fauci is more popular than Trump . In fact there does not seem to be a single poll in the last 15 years that has Congress' approval rating above water! While pathetic, it's hardly surprising that the American people look on the legislative body with such disapproval and disdain. After almost entirely neutering itself during the course of the Trump presidency, Congress, the branch in charge of passing laws and appropriating money, has proven utterly incapable of responding to the greatest crisis in modern American history with anything more than massive giveaways to the wealthy, and market discipline for the poor. Mitch McConnell has shepherded a breathtaking consolidation of corporate power, shielding them from liability, while preventing nearly any relief to working class Americans being crushed beneath the weight of multiple black swan events. The Democrats, hardly better, can't muster the votes against ever increasing military spending, or even Universal Healthcare in the midst of a public health crisis. The rulers are clearly unfit to rule, the American people know it, and have for a long time. The only question is whether this time they'll actually hold these corrupt politicians accountable. Unfortunately, as we at DSOT have constantly pointed out, securing any significant concessions from Democrats, let alone Republicans is a massive uphill effort, requiring a sustainable and growing movement. But critical junctures, especially during election years are just the moments when people power can force big change: either from politicians looking to keep their jobs, or from public servants who replace the ones that weren't responsive. That's no easy task, but if we are to emerge from beyond COVID-19 as a nation not in ruin, but in rebirth, getting not just economic prosperity for all Americans, but the time to flourish as humans and create a more socially conscious society, it's going to take an enduring collective movement of commensurate size and power, to the forces of economic oppression, ignorance and bigotry we face! to create that better future will require the stamina to outlast the powers that be, and convince them that there is no choice but to change or lose everything. Don’t miss this chance to join us every Tuesday, in growing solidarity and power until we take back our democracy from amoral special interests, and greedy politicians: Don't Shop on Tuesdays!
