Unrepresentative Policy of the Week
Term Limits for Supreme Court Justices (78%):The beginning of a new year is often an opportunity to take a long view of our goals and the progress we have made towards them, as well as the obstacles laying in our path. One of the most pernicious barriers to reclaiming our democracy is the seizure of the SCOTUS by reactionary, corporatist forces.
This past fall, the highly politicized (perhaps even weaponized) appointment of injustice Kavanaugh brought the specter of a new Lochner court eraback into the minds of the American public. The Supreme Court, often a friend of progress in the middle of the 20th century, has firmly moved out of sync with the opinions and aspirations of the American people, and the lifetime appointment of these justices suggests no quick and easy remedies.
Constitutional amendments are difficult to pass, requiring 2/3 support of both houses of Congress, and support from 3/4 of the states. Support among the American people for SCOTUS term limits surpasses even the towering 3/4 barrier for a constitutional amendment! The US Constitution has been amended 27 times, and it's time for Congress to listen to the nearly 8/10 Americans who think limits to SCOTUS terms should be introduced, and make it 28.
